Blurb: When Regan was a young girl living in the small town of Altus, OK, Kellan was just her brother’s best friend. Then the virus came, turning the world’s population into zombies, and he became so much more. They were only kids, but he saved her. Watched over her. Kept her alive. And he’s been doing the same thing every day since.
After living the apocalypse for nine years, Regan thought they’d experienced every kind of loss and terror imaginable. But when a new group starts wreaking havoc in the Oklahoma wastelands where they live, Regan and Kellan are faced with a new set of horrors.
When they cross paths with a teenage girl, offering to help seems like the right thing to do. But Regan and Kellan soon discover that lending aid to the girl very well could lead to their undoing.
Kate L. Mary is an award-winning author of New Adult and Young Adult fiction, ranging from Post-apocalyptic tales of the undead, to Speculative Fiction and Contemporary Romance. Outside, the sun was making its final descent toward the horizon, painting what was left of the blue sky orange and pink and purple. It was beautiful. Almost heartbreakingly so. Living where we did, I got to see so few sunsets, and no matter how lucky and how safe we were, I couldn’t help missing some of the simple things everyone else got to experience on a daily basis. Sunsets, rainbows after a storm, the flicker of lightning bugs on a dark summer night.
Kellan had his bag and was already headed toward the door when I grabbed mine. I slung it over my shoulder and followed, feeling groggy and slightly unsteady on my feet. In front of me, he opened the door, but paused to look around. Before he had even uttered a word, I knew what was coming.
“Heads up,” he called as he stepped out.
Even half asleep, pulling my gun was an automatic response, and it was in my hand before I’d taken another step, the safety flicked off and the barrel pointed at the ground just like I’d been taught. I couldn’t see much of the yard thanks to Kellan’s broad frame, but his tone told me there wouldn’t be more than three of the dead. He was too calm. Too laid back.
When I made it out, I had to squint against the swiftly setting sun. Kellan was already moving across the yard, and through the bright rays I could make out two figures. They were slow, which was normal these days, and after my eyes had adjusted, I could see that they were old. Early days of the apocalypse, I’d guess. Their clothes were little more than rags, torn and weathered, and the zombie on the right dragged his foot behind him as he lurched toward Kellan. Of course, I couldn’t say for sure if the thing had at one time been a he, because at this point there was no way to tell. The creature’s scalp was ripped down to the bone, and not a single tendril of hair had survived, and its face hadn’t fared much better. The skin on its cheeks had been ripped—or eaten—away, and its gums, black and rotten, were visible, along with the few teeth left. There weren’t many, and they were brown, gnarled things that probably hadn’t been in good shape when it was still a person. Not that the lack of teeth stopped the creature from chomping at Kellan and me right now.
I kept my gun out, but transferred it to my left hand so I could pull my knife with my right. Bullets weren’t the issue—we had plenty of those—it was the noise a gunshot would make. Not only would firing a gun risk drawing more zombies our way, but it could also attract the attention of people, and that was the last thing we needed right now. Or ever, for that matter. Especially not the type of people who would come running at a gunshot.
Kellan pulled his own knife when the first zombie was still six feet away. The one in front of him wasn’t the one with the bad foot. No, this one was faster, and his facial features were intact enough to tell me that he had in fact been a man when he was alive. A pair of beat up cowboy boots still adorned his feet, and the tatters of a plaid button up shirt clung to his torso. When he opened his mouth to growl at Kellan, revealing a full set of brown teeth, a shudder moved down my spine. Nine years, and I still wasn’t used to these things.
“Stay back,” Kellan called as he charged forward and grabbed the zombie by the little bit of fabric still clinging to his body.
I didn’t listen, of course, but instead hurried after him so I’d be there in case he needed backup. Odds were good he’d be okay. Kellan knew how to handle himself, but you never knew what was going to happen these days, and it was better to be safe than sorry.
He wrapped his fist in the creature’s shirt, working to keep the struggling zombie at arm’s length. In his other hand he held the knife, which he expertly flipped over so he was holding it blade down. When Kellan lifted his hand, the zombie in his grasp growled and chomped, but he held his ground, not flinching even a little bit when the creature’s teeth snapped inches from his skin. I moved closer, my fingers tightening on the knife in my own hand, but just like I’d thought, he didn’t need me. The blade was stuck deep in the zombie’s eye socket only seconds later, and the thing went down, its body thumping against the dry Oklahoma ground.
Kellan’s eyes were focused on the second zombie when he leaned down to retrieve his knife, but I was already moving before he’d managed to pull it from the skull.
“Regan,” he said, reaching out for me, “stop.”
I was too far away, though, and too focused on the dead man in front of me. Copying what Kellan had done only a few seconds ago, I flipped my knife around so I was gripping it with the blade pointed toward the ground. My heart thumped out a beat that echoed in my ears and nearly drowned out the sound of the moans. Meanwhile, a bead of sweat had begun a slow descent down my body, starting on my chest and moving between my breasts. I swallowed an irrational bubble of fear that was desperately trying to rise up from deep inside me, and kept my gaze focused on the zombie. He was old and slow, but I was young and had the reflexes of someone living. There was nothing to worry about.
I lifted my arm and prepared to bring it down, aiming for the eye socket just like Kellan had, but before I could do anything, he grabbed my elbow and pulled me back. I stumbled over my own feet and tried to regain my footing, but my balance was off and my hands full. I went down hard, my ass slamming into the dusty earth, and the impact vibrated through me until I felt it in my teeth. A hiss of pain and annoyance forced its way between my teeth, followed only a moment later by another thump as the second zombie hit the ground.
Kellan yanked his knife from the thing’s eye socket and turned to face me. “You okay?”
“No thanks to you.” I twisted my body, pushing myself half off the ground so I could rub my sore ass. I’d landed on the bruise that had already started developing from my fall the night before, and I now knew my entire butt cheek was going to be black and blue. “What the hell was that?”
“I told you to stay back.” He shoved his knife into its sheath and replaced his gun in its holster. Then he held his hand out to me. “Come on.”
I slapped it away and pushed myself up, pausing long enough to swipe my own weapons up off the ground. His gaze was on me, I could feel it burning into my back, but I couldn’t look at him. My blood felt like it had been baking in the damn sun for hours, and more than anything right now, I wanted to hit him.
“What’s your problem?” he asked.
“Like you really don’t know.” I stared down at the crisscross pattern the sole of his boots had left behind in the dirt, too angry to look at him.
“I don’t.” He paused like he was waiting for me to respond, but when I didn’t, he said, “You think I should have let that thing take a bite out of you?”
I spun around to face him. “Why do you automatically assume it would have gotten the better of me?”
“Because you’re not experienced enough.” He shoved his hand through his dark hair, pushing it back off his forehead. “You’ve only been out a handful of times.”
“And exactly how am I going to get any experience if you won’t even let me take down a slow zombie like that? What will I do if I’m by myself and I come up against a new one, one that’s faster, and I have no experience? How do you think I’ll survive?”
Kellan blinked like my words made no sense to him. “Why would you be alone?”
“Because things can happen, Kellan.” I rolled my eyes and shoved my knife into its sheath. “Seriously, I can’t even believe I have to tell you that.”
“I’d die before I let anything happen to you.”
His words made my insides clench and tingle. Made me feel like I was soaring into the sky. Still, I was obligated to point out the implications behind them.
“That’s my point,” I said slowly. “What if you died and I was left alone? Shouldn’t I have some experience so I can make a stand?”
Kellan’s mouth dropped open, but he said nothing. We stood there staring at each other while the scorching Oklahoma sun pounded down on us. I couldn’t read his expression, which was strange. Usually, I could tell what Kellan was thinking. But at the moment, he was too guarded. It was like a wall had gone up.

Review for Hell Bound: A World Apart (Book 2) by Kathy Dinisi

Blurb:
Hell Bound, A world apart is the second Novella in a three part post Apocalypse series.

Making it home after a horrifying Vacation, Sam and Mathew find that their kids are missing. With no sign of them anywhere they set off to find them. But what they discover is a whole new set of problems, the brain eating zombies are getting smarter, people are crueler. And the Military has abandoned them. Will Mathew and Sam find their children? Follow them as they fight to find their children in a world that’s gone to Hell.

Review:
A great follow up to book one, I can see improvement in the author's writing. More danger and new characters, this one will keep you on the edge of your seat. Love and loss binds this group together as they move through different states on a quest to find those they love. The zombies in this series are pretty disgusting and scary. Zombies in general are scary, but zombies with ideas that speak and are fast are even scarier. The only thing is it needs a bit more editing and some formatting work. Otherwise, a very entertaining read you don't want to start at night.

4 out of 5 stars!

Review and Release Day for Surviving Earth: Makayla's Journey by Cora A Murray

Blurb:
After two years of being alone, keeping death at bay by sheer will, Makayla isn't sure if she was fit for humanity, much less a young girl and two teen boys.

At 19 she's seen and done things that would make your blood curdle and survived it all with the aid of her Dad's Glock, a sawed-off shotgun, her katana and the skills she learned from her Dad. But, as the days pass life is breaking her down.

Will Makayla survive the Earth that had been left or will she fall prey to what hides in the shadows?

Review:
This is one quick paced, possibly terror inducing, zombie book.  If you are looking for something with gore, this is it.  Mak is a young woman constantly on the run from not only zombies, but other survivors as well.  The world has become a very dangerous place to live in now that is has been repopulated with flesh eaters.  Some of them are falling apart, and some of them are what the author calls "freshies".  Now, just the name alone sounds disgusting to me, and they are.  These things are gross and nasty.  But Mak can handle a lot of things.  In fact, she often tries to take on the whole world by herself without asking for the help of others.  She doesn't want anyone to get hurt unless it's her.  Mak is the type to want to try and save the whole world if she can, which I admire her for.  She's also very good with her weapons.  And she is on a long journey to find her best friend.  On that journey though, she encounters a few bumps in the road: zombies, survivors willing to rape and kill others, and survivors needing help from her.  Because of her willingness to help those who need it, she finds herself with a little band of survivors all traveling with her.  Some of them are just kids.  But in this world, they have to grow up fast and learn how to protect themselves.  And Mak has to learn to rely on others she can trust.  I have to say, there were some times in this book I was holding my breath.  And if you're looking for a happy ending, you won't find it here.  It's the zombie apocalypse people!  Let's be realistic.  But....there will be another book, and I am anxious to see what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars!

REVIEW of The Trek to Elysium Chronicles (Volume 1) by Hugh Williams

Just finished up reading this one and I was kind of glad it wasn't really scary. I liked the different perspective that the author gave on how the zombie apocalypse began and the fact that the main character was a bit of a conspiracy theorist and one who was prepared for some major fallout to happen. If something major really did happen, this type of person would be the one ready for it. That's who you would want to find. The journey of this guy and his friends is filled with zombie hordes and an interesting little tidbit at the end about the corporation that started all of this mess. I do have to wonder though about what happened to the deputy that disappeared in the end. Is he actually dead? Is he a zombie? Or is he a traitor?

Blurb:

This book is the first of three than I plan to write for this series. It tracks the travels of myself and 3 friends as we attempt to escape the Zombie apocalypse. The story is set in Southern Illinois, Carbondale to be specific, as that is where I currently live.

The apocalypse was caused by a combination of factors. One was our government allowed people with the Nova virus to come to our country to get help. We are still the only country that allows that. Second, a corrupt (are there any others) mega corporation that was given a huge government contract to perfect a vaccine to cure Nova allowed the vaccines to become contaminated. Millions of people took the vaccine and I think the reader will figure out what happened as a result of the contamination.

It is very hard to keep politics out of Zombie books, so I do not try to. I express my opinions as I see things as do the other characters in the book. Please keep in mind that this book is a work of fiction. All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Love and Decay, Volume 1: Season 1 (Episodes 1-6) by Rachel Higginson

The world used to be a normal place.  People lined up at the local coffee shops for their morning caffeine boost, while chatting or texting on their cell phones.  Reagan Willow was in high school, going to cheer practice while her nearly perfect boyfriend was the star football player on the team.  It was normal, nice even.  Now, two years later, Reagan and her best friend Haley were trying to make it the best that they know how.  They were living like homeless vagabonds, sleeping in abandoned places back-to-back so as to not be caught unaware by the flesh eaters roaming pretty much everywhere now.  It was the zombie apocalypse, and all because someone cured herpes.  The cure turned out to be the end of the world.  No more electricity, and no more fast food.  In fact, the two of them would go days at a time without eating and just hoped they would get through the night and then the next day.  One day they got into a situation that looked bad until the Parker family showed up.  The brothers get them out of harm's way and take them home where they meet Page, the little sister.  This is a very close family determined to survive this apocalypse together.  Not only do they survive, but they actually live.  Haley and Reagan had little hope of anything other than survival until they are grafted into the Parker family.  Women were in short supply these days so it was dangerous for them even traveling with a bunch of survivalists like the brothers.  These guys were armed to the teeth and had food!  The girls find much more than a measure of security with them.  Two of the brothers are interested in Reagan and one was interested in Haley.  They were all gentlemen who would never press a woman to do something she didn't want to.  Haley finds it easier to fall for Nelson, but Reagan fights it and is determined to not fall in love so her heart won't be broken when he gets killed by a zombie.  She felt like it was just impossible to find that kind of happiness in this kind of life.  But Hendrix is determined to show her otherwise.

Wow.  I am stuck on this series now!  I love the occasional zombie apocalypse book, but this one could possibly beat all others.  I love the complexity of everything.  There are no modern conveniences anymore and everyone has basically been plunged back into the stone age.  There are still a few running vehicles and some gas, but for the most part Haley and Reagan are walking to South America where Reagan had a family member last she heard of.  It could be a much safer place for them, if they can get there in one piece.
The Parkers are unlike anything the girls had yet to see in this dark and depressing world.  They lived with honor and love for their family.  They respected others.  And they protect those they love.  Falling in love with a zombie apocalypse going on turns out to be a challenge.  Haley can only fight her love for Nelson for so long.  But Reagan is unwilling to really let her heart go.  In fact, I don't think she ever really lets it go all of the way during this entire book.  It seems that she just can't yet.  She cares for Vaughan, and even more for Hendrix, but love is not yet in her vocabulary.  With the fact that any one of them could die at any moment, it keeps her heart in check.  This is painfully obvious when little eight-year-old Page becomes ill and most of them are captured by a colony of people who keep women like possessions.  Even after escaping one predicament, it seems like they just fall into another.  One has to ask themselves, is there ever any kind of peace in a world like this?
A fantastic book!  Definitely 5 out of 5 stars!

Battle for the Afterlife Saga: Blue Courage by CJ Davis

Reese is a highly trained Navy Seal who is good at what he does.  He has the strength and the guts to do what it takes to get the job done.  And it so happens, this job is going to Mexico and extracting a friend's daughter from a very dangerous cartel.  In the process he is wounded and taken hostage.  While being a prisoner, he meets the beautiful Kate.  He is instantly drawn to her, almost like they have met before.  But he would have remembered if they had.  Unfortunately he and Kate are killed during the rescue mission and Reese finds himself in the Afterlife.  Except this Afterlife is nothing like you would think.  It's not angels and cherubs with harps, and rainbows in clouds.  It's very much like Earth.  It has a city with a wall surrounding it, and guess what?  It comes complete with Lost Souls, or what we would think of as something like a zombie.  They stay outside the city gates waiting for unsuspecting prey.  Occasionally you will find one inside the city because they had recently turned into a Lost Soul.  Lose your focus in this world, become complacent, and you're done for.  Once you die in the Afterlife, there is nothing left of you.  You don't get to go back to Earth reincarnated or anything.  Despite having the ability to live forever, it's still a somewhat dangerous place at times with the Red and Blue factions against each other.  The Blues take a more peaceful approach to things and help others during their earthly lives.  The Reds are just the opposite.  The most powerful of them were some very bad people when they were alive on Earth.  And then there are the Greens who are neutral.  They don't want to get caught in the middle of the fighting, should it happen.
This is the time when the Centennial happens during the Afterlife.  Every one hundred years is a race between the Reds and the Blues, and everyone watches.  If the Reds win again, there could be a tip in power and the truce between the two factions could be broken.  Reese finds out that he is a Blue and a very powerful one at that.  He will be a part of the small team participating in the Centennial.  It's a dangerous business because one can die from the Reds, large beasts, or Lost Souls in this race.  To make matters worse, Kate is in the race with him, and he must fight his instinct to continually keep her safe.  This race is even more important than his feelings for her.  The question is whether he could sacrifice her if it came down to it, so that the Reds won't win?

This was a very different outlook on the Afterlife.  It was intriguing to thing that it's much like our lives here and now on Earth, but more dangerous in some ways because of the mighty beasts, Lost Souls, and the possibility of war between the Reds and the Blues.  While it seems a bit cut and dried to have two factions that seem like one is obviously good while the other obviously bad, Davis does a good job of weaving a story more complicated than it seems.  The farther you get into the book, the more you are able to see this.  I thought it was a particularly nice touch adding the Lost Souls to the book.  We would consider them to be zombies, but here they are lazy bums who lost their focus in the Afterlife and became complacent.  Never bettering themselves, they turned into something awful.  It is full of adventure, that's for sure.
The very beginning I felt was a bit rushed and not everything was clear, but much of it became clearer as I read more of the book.  In fact, I felt like it became much more interesting once Reese entered the Afterlife.  After all, that's where all of the major action went down.  There were also quite a few grammatical errors.  It just needs a little more polish for it to be a really good book!
I enjoyed how different this book was and hope to see more in CJ Davis's future novels!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Apocalyptic Moon by Eva Gordon

Dr. Dora Adler loved what she did.  She enjoyed helping people.  In fact, she was pretty much married to her work.  No time for relationships and men.  Not when she worked constantly and her shifts could be any time of the day and night.  Then the dreaded Z-Phage struck, turning tons of people into zombies.  When it does, Dora is stuck diagnosing those with the early stages of the virus.  She has a particular gift at being able to discern who has it in the early stages when others cannot.  Everything changes when she is bitten by one of the zombies inside of the hospital.  When she doesn't turn, she's taken to a facility to run tests on her to try and find a cure.  Their tests are more like torture to Dora than anything else.  She had endured countless bites to see if she would ever turn.  While there, she meets the very hot Dirk Gunderson.  He is definitely hotter than any romance novel she has ever read.  Until he tells her he is a werewolf.  Then she starts doubting his sanity.  After he tells Dora she's a witch, she's sure he is deranged.  Proof of what he is seems easy enough, but it scares her.  And after having to come to terms with what Dirk is, it's not so far fetched to think she is a witch with her strange abilities.  Like her ability to sense the virus on anyone before symptoms really present themselves.  Oh and the mind talk thing she can do with Dirk.  Mr. Bad Boy/Playboy likes Dora too.  Maybe too much.  He has never been tied down and never wanted to be until Dora came into the picture.  But first they must escape.  There will be tons of trials ahead of them.  But they are both determined to get back to their families and to safety.  On the way they'll fight countless zombies, other lycans, and even their own growing feelings for each other.  As much as he wants to mark her as his mate, if he does, Dirk could start a huge pack war.  Being an Alpha and next in line, certain things are expected of him.  Mating with a powerful witch and having offspring that could do who-knows-what is not one of them.  Marking her could be more dangerous than the hordes of zombies they face on a daily basis.  Still, Dirk isn't sure just how long he can hold out before making Dora his.

This book is zombies, werewolves, witches, and romance wrapped all in one!  It packs all of your hideous zombie movies in with some serious Wolverine-type werewolf action while throwing in some definite steaminess to it!  Besides it overplaying Star Trek quotes a little too much, it is a great read for those of you into the paranormal and sci-fi books!  Who doesn't like a little forbidden love?  Dirk and his kind are dangerous, very dangerous, but he is the only chance of Dora finding her brother and niece.  He is also the only way to find out more about what she really is.  Watching their struggles to survive along with the struggle with their feelings is one rather exciting adventure!
