Empty Space by Alan Black

York sixteen grew up in a system that didn't treat orphans well. They were abused in the worst of ways by anyone and everyone. They could never climb the social ladder no matter how hard they tried. They were nobodies and always would be. York is a survivor though. He does what he has to, but even his best isnt good enough when he loses his top ranking in the military school on the day he graduates. As a result of being at the top and an orphan, he was set up and ultimately stripped of his rank. Eventually he's assigned to a remote area far away in space. A true touch-me-not, being alone doesn't bother York that much. However he does need some human contact and finally begins a tentative friendship with a few people who live on the planet he's closest to. Plagued by those kidnapping people for the slave trade, York finally finds his purpose in helping them gain their freedom from these slavers.

My thoughts on York. He's a serial killer with justification; kind of a vigilante. He rids society of the trash it won't take care of, which is mainly anyone helping make the rich and powerful more rich and powerful. No one on the planet Liberty exactly adheres to the law. They do what they have to to survive. They're York's kind of people. As a consequence of being stationed where he was, he finds things he had been missing his whole life: friendship, acceptance, a love interest, and a purpose. This guy has a serious dark side to him, but it all stems from his childhood, I'm pretty sure. Alan Black created a complicated character with York Sixteen. He's sort of a dark knight mixed in with Star Wars. I would say that York is very much like the conflicted Anakin on Star Wars before he becomes Darth Vader.

A very cool sci-fi read no doubt!  5 out of 5 stars!!

Book Blurb:

York August Sixteen was abandoned as a baby, abused and molested as a child, beaten and harassed as a teen, and had his rightful place in the Republic’s Space Navy stolen from him. Fighting back against huge government systems was useless. Dispensing justice on an individual case-by-case basis was more to his liking, yet even that was taken away when he was stationed on a lonely communication space station. York’s life would change when he decides to seek justice for people even less fortunate than him.

Whispers of a Faded Dreamer by Celesta Thiessen

A little social experiment by Kingcade Worldcorp changes the life of young Cara Pierce.  The big corporation put out a projection of alien spaceships with inky black aliens coming out of them.  The thing is that not everyone can see them.  Those that are are invited to start working for them.  All they have to do is sleep and dream.  The catch?  Other people will be able to see them.  But Cara's father is very sick and in the hospital.  Her family needs money.  By working here and making a lot of money, she gets on better terms with her abusive mother.  Cara was adopted and has not been treating her the same as her little brother since their dad has been in the hospital.  Cara also feels that she can help people with her dreams.  She has many exciting adventures in her dreams and meets Bryce, a guy from her school, and the High King quite often in them.  The High King is always a guide to them on where to go and what to do.  The only problem is that Cara starts spending more and more time at the sleep clinic.  She has no friends anymore and almost never interacts with her family.  She starts to think that maybe she should get out more.  But there are unforeseen consequences to all of her work at Kingcade Worldcorp.  Even though it's tough, the High King always has a plan for everything.

I very much enjoyed the adventures Cara was involved in with her dream life.  It was interesting how much of her life became her work, her dreams.  It was basically all she did and eventually it started wearing on her.  She wasn't living real life.  It was a fantasy land.  And she was always dreaming of Bryce although she kept saying she didn't like him and for a small part of the book (in the beginning) she had a boyfriend.  But he wasn't a good guy.  It was a good read!  A very clean read.  This is a Christian book too!

Fugitive by John Day

Max and Carla are at it again, on their big adventures full of danger and always life-threatening!  Except this time a complication arises and Max ends up in the hospital without any recollection of who he is or why the authorities are out to get him.  In fact, the feds are always after Max and Carla.  Why?  Well they wok for a super under cover agency called The Organisation and they do a lot of under-handed business getting things done.  Because Max escapes, Carla and The Organisation cannot seem to locate him.  Because he is still recovering, he needs someone to look after him until he is well.  It so happens that Max meets a girl on the streets who nurses him back to health and gets in on his plan of getting cash and starting to build real identities for themselves so they won't have to worry about the authorities always chasing them.  This girl, Star, turns out to be something vastly different than what Max had thought.  In a confession to him one night, she tells him that she's basically a serial killer with a mental problem and she broke out of an institution.  And now Max wonders if his life is also in danger from her, but he goes with it and carries out several nefarious plans involving local drug gangs.  All the while, Carla is desperately seeking him while on a mission for The Organisation.  She is determined to get him back no matter what!

I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller by John Day!  It has tons of adventure and energy to it so you are guaranteed to never get bored with it!  I especially like the idea of introducing a possible new love interest for Max and the whole amnesia thing.  Since he can't seem to remember who he was before, he goes on with his life.  What is funny is that he is doing almost the same thing he would have been doing under The Organisation.  However, he is good enough to even avoid their eye for quite a while which is quite a feat for anyone.  If you like thrillers, then you should look into this one!

Thaddeus Whiskers and the Dragon by H.L. Burke

This is a new chapter book for kids by H.L. Burke that I recently read and I really enjoyed it!  In fact, so did my oldest child!
Thaddeus F. Whiskers is a royal companion ( a cat) to the Princess Clarice.  On her 10th birthday, the castle wizard, Hermes, decides to make him really fluffy as a present to Clarice.  The spell backfires and leaves most of the court sneezing until Thaddeus is removed to a village quite a ways away.  With a spell on him, Thaddeus will never be able to find the way home on his own.  He hates being separated from Clarice and is determined to find her.  After escaping the village, he finds a dragon who basically adopts him as his own pet.  They like each other's company, but Thaddues never forgets that he must get back to Clarice.  In fact, it so happens that she and the king are in danger from a woman named Ambrosia who wants to be queen.  She will stop at nothing, so Thaddeus must stop her with the help of some strange friends.

I love how unexpected some of the friendships in this story are and the incorporating of magic into it with kind of a medieval theme!  It makes for a very imaginative and creative story that will fuel your child's imagination!

Blurb:

Thaddeus F. Whiskers is a pampered palace pet, a kitten enchanted to never become a cat. Princess Clarice loves him, for in the entire kingdom, for there is no other kitten as cute or as clever. He leads a life of cushions and cream until a wizard's "gift" results in his banishment. Determined to make it back to the princess he loves, he escapes into the wilderness where he discovers the lair of a dragon.

Grandious, the dragon, doesn't care about anything besides himself. He wants to be left alone with his treasure. However, there is something about Thaddeus that has him entranced. He finds himself opening his home and his heart to the little cat.

Thaddeus is a small creature in a big world. Between him and his beloved Princess stand conniving wizards, would-be-step-mothers, and rampaging rats. However, when danger threatens both Clarice and Grandious, Thaddeus won't allow his size to get in the way of saving his friends.

This book is for pre-order right now on Amazon!  It will be released on March 1st and I highly recommend this one for your children!  Even I thought Thaddeus's journey was rather interesting, even if it is a children's book!
