Blog Tour for We Were Ghosts by Tabitha Barret

TBarret - WWG Banner (1).png

WeWereGhostsSmallerWebUse.jpg

When Alicia meets the new guy in school, there is something about the mischievous look in his eyes that implies he's breaking the rules by talking to her. It's the rule abused kids live by - don't let anyone into your life. Don't let them see the real you.

She and Zack both have secret lives that only the other can understand. They suffer in silence, afraid that no one will believe them. Can their love for one another help free them from their turbulent lives, if only for a few minutes at a time? Together, can they find the courage and strength to escape from their hidden world of lies and deception in order to live normal lives?

Content warnings: This is story is meant to inspire hope in abused teens and young adults, though there are a number of traumatic scenes of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Some scenes may be disturbing for readers.

Excerpt:

Turning my head at a noise next to me, I ignored the fallen pencil and locked onto the blue eyes that were smiling apologetically at me less than six inches from my arm.  Zack’s smile was something poets took years to describe in poems as they tried to capture the innocence mixed with a hint of mischief.  I completely forgot about my wall of silence as I turned my body toward him, unable to resist his playful grin.
I think my mouth must have fallen open because I suddenly started coughing as I choked on nothing but air.
The rest of the class turned to see if they needed to administer CPR or call for the paramedics.  Even Scott raised his eyebrow at me.  “Do you need water, Alicia?  You can run to the water fountain if you need to,” he said, motioning to the hallway.  His voice sounded somewhere between amused and annoyed.  I was convinced that Scott was gay, though he did everything within his power to hide it from the Catholic School Administration.  It would have been frowned upon by the church, though Scott seemed to be liked by the other teachers.
I nodded my head, trying to remember what it was like to breathe normally.  I made it the hallway as fast as my Rockports could carry me.  My sensible walking shoes got me to the water fountain and I drained half of the water supply before I came up for air.  In an unladylike move, I wiped my mouth from my elbow to my wrist on my navy pullover sweater.  When I was able to move air through my windpipe without keeling over, I threw my hip into the nearest locker and leaned my head against it.  I suddenly realized why I had put up the frost wall to keep Zack out and why I had nearly swallowed my lungs.  I could never have Zack, even if I wished for it on every birthday candle.
I slunk back into the room and ignored the snickers from the two senior girls in the front row.  I pulled my skirt against the backs of my legs and I tried to sit quietly as the wood rubbed against the metal contraption they dubbed a desk.  Scott had forgotten about my interruption had moved on to helping someone who had a finger cut off by a jigsaw.  The vast majority of the room was grumbling about the graphic photos in the textbook and asking questions about how much ice was needed to keep the finger cold.  The morbid kids were busy doodling little squirts of blood around the hand.
Zack, however, was staring at a blank section of desk.  His book was open and he was on the correct page, but he seemed like he was three states away.  I knew how he felt.  It was like that for me most days.
Curiosity tugged at me and I was forced to look at him again.  He was hunched over on his forearms and his feet were tucked away on either side of the desk.  He looked like a normal, bored student, but there was something about his expression that made him stand out from everyone else.  His smile had vanished and he almost looked worried about something as he glanced up at the clock.  I was sad when the bell rang, signaling that I had run out of time to look at Zack for the day.
Grabbing my purse from behind my chair, I absently watched Zack pick up his books.  I opened my mouth to speak though I hadn’t completely formed the words in my brain.  “If you want to avoid Heather, I would use the stairs in the middle of the school.  It will take you a little longer to get to the lockers, but I mostly see her, or rather, ignore her, coming up the stairs on this side of the building.”  I regretted the sound that came from my throat instantly.
He frowned at me like I was a lunatic and then suddenly a blindly gorgeous smile crept across his lips.  Before I knew what I was doing, I was smiling too, though I probably looked high.  He nodded and gave a small chuckle.  “Thanks for the advice.  I like your escape plan better than the one I came up with,” he said, looking at my face instead of the floor, the wall, or the speck of dust on the heater behind me.  “I was planning on either jumping out the window and making a break for the parking lot or climbing onto the desk and crawling through the ceiling until I made my way to the roof.”
The sparkle in his eyes showed that hint of mischief I had seen earlier.  I stupidly shrugged and nodded, unable to reply.  By the time he made it to the door, I had my witty reply all ready, but of course, it was too late.  He looked over his shoulder at me and pointed in the direction of the main staircase.  I nodded with a stupid grin on my face.

New Release and Review for Beyond Falling Stars (Starlight Saga Book 3) by Sherry Soule

Beyond Falling Stars (Starlight Saga Book 3) by Sherry Soule

Blurb:

Being hunted by alien mutants totally sucks. And the threat of imprisonment in a secret underground lab? Even suckier.

Now that Sloane Masterson’s blackmailer has been revealed, and she knows the truth about why Hayden’s been so secretive, she’s ready to put all that epic craziness behind her.
Besides, Sloane has bigger problems to deal with, like protecting her family from Sector Thirteen and getting Hayden’s snobby parents to accept her as one of them. . .which is proving more difficult than giving up chocolate.
And what better way to win over the ’rents and evade ST than an intergalactic vacay with her smoking’ hot boyfriend?
Sloane and her bestie, Viola Saks, are invited to join the Lancaster brothers for a twisted family reunion on their home planet, an oasis of wicked cool beaches, warm dual suns, and clear blue seas.
But danger lurks in paradise. . .
Even in this beautiful utopia, Sloane and Hayden’s relationship is never far from higher levels of suckage. They might be vacationing in a galaxy far, far away, but someone still wants her dead.
Will their love survive all the secrets and betrayals?

Review:
A fascinating end to the Starlight Series! I'm not even sure where to start besides that Sloane is a trouble magnet like no other. How one girl can unintentionally cause so much havoc is beyond me. But the love she and Hayden share is the real deal and because of it, Sloane is constantly in danger from one person or another, or a whole group of people. It's like a series of very unfortunate events. It is nice to read how much she wanted the approval of Hayden's parents. The trip to Reticuli goes from vacation from Earth to even more hazardous than being back on her home planet. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Fright Night Babble interspersed throughout the book. It lends real character to the book and enhances Sloane's character further. This book also goes to show just how deeply words can hurt others. The nasty things said really get to Sloane for a while and in reality that's what happens when people put others down. It's a good lesson in not doing that to others and another in not listening to those that make you doubt your own self-worth. The only thing about the book? There was something that happened with her powers which was not really explored further and I sure wish it had been. Otherwise, it was a great read!
5 out of 5 stars!

GUEST POST: Ten Random Facts About The Starlight Saga by Sherry Soule

Ten Random Facts about the Starlight Saga ~ #StarlightSaga

Today bestselling author Sherry Soule has some exciting news to share with us. She has recently published the next book in her popular Starlight Saga series, a humorous paranormal romance. Sherry is doing this fun guest post to share the book love with fellow readers.
Be warned, these books have scorching-hot romance!
1.) I believe in the paranormal genre that aliens and science fiction type stories are going to be the next big thing. Add a little romance…even better. Vampires had their time, werewolves are overworked, and even though zombies are still going strong, I think extraterrestrials need some love now, too.
2.) In my first novel, LOST IN STARLIGHT, the storyline revolves around the two main characters trying to overcome major obstacles to be together. It’s like an intergalactic version of Romeo and Juliet, with scorching-hot character chemistry right from the beginning. Hayden and Sloane share a strong attraction and mutual interest in one another and become best friends, which make the best kind of love stories in my humble opinion.
3.) From the very first draft, I wanted to add something a little unique and special to Sloane’s quirky character. Thus, FRIGHT NIGHT BABBLE, her online newspaper column was born. (*Link to posts below) I think the short, humorous posts every few chapters adds a fun element to the narrative. My last few books were so angst-ridden and dark that I wanted to write something lighter, but still thrilling and romantic.
4.) The island that the characters live on is actually a real place within the San Francisco Bay Area. Although the name Winter Haven is fictional, the actual island is named Alameda, and it’s a lovely city to visit. I would love to live there! “Winter Haven” (Alameda) is located on Alameda Island and Bay Farm Island, and is adjacent to west of Oakland and within the East Bay.
5.) LOST IN STARLIGHT is the fastest book that I’ve ever written. It took me only about four months to write and do revisions. I had the idea in the back of my mind for about a year now, but it wasn’t until a short-lived TV show called “Star-Crossed” convinced me that alien love stories were super hot right now. And I was extremely lucky and blessed to have worked with some very talented writers (my CPs) that really helped me to shape the book into the thrilling storyline it is now.
6.) The Starlight Saga will be a trilogy; unless of course, it goes viral and readers clamor for more Sloane and Hayden adventures. Then I’ll happily keep writing more novels featuring this quirky and lovable cast of characters. (I know readers will fall in love with Hayden along with Sloane.)
7.) Sloane is by far my favorite character. She is just snarky and quirky and fun to write. Most authors admit that a little bit of themselves goes into each protagonist, but Sloane is near and dear to my heart. If a headstrong, gutsy, and imperfect heroine with an eccentric fashion sense appeals to you, then I think you'll love Sloane, too.
8.) In LOST IN STARLIGHT, there isn’t the insta-love or love triangle that is popular in so many YA books nowadays. This is the real deal. The book is meant for older YA readers and does contain some mild language. The characters are all eighteen years old, except for Sloane who is only seventeen in this first book.
9.) The names of the two main characters came to me instantly. They just seemed to fit perfectly. Some of the secondary characters had a few name changes during rewrites, but Sloane and Hayden’s never varied.
10.) One day, I was browsing images on a stock photo site and as soon as I saw the image of that purpled-haired girl (the female image featured on the book cover), I just knew that I’d found my “Sloane.” This photo completely inspired me to write her story and make Sloane different from most YA heroines. Hayden’s image, featured on the front cover beside his darker haired younger brother, seemed to perfectly fit the character I had envisioned, too.
So there you have it! Ten random facts about the Starlight Saga!

REVIEW for Millie Hardiman and the Red Parrot Fever by Eddie Owens

Blurb:

Millie Hardiman is a thirteen year old from Bognor Regis, with a wild imagination, who dreams of becoming a writer.

When Millie’s scriptwriter Dad, Barry, has writer’s block, Millie becomes his muse for the daytime television soap, Double Top.

After her success on Double Top, Millie creates a Sci-Fi, teen drama, The Adventures of Martian Girl.

Millie falls in love for the first time with Wolf Van Der Beek, an arrogant, South African child actor.

This is a story about friendship, first love and growing up.

Review:
I just finished reading this book. Never read anything by the author before but I found this book about a girl named Millie to be pretty entertaining. I would recommend it for young teens. I did find Millie to be somewhat annoying with her constant story telling at times, but she does eventually learn her lesson and uses her stories for more constructive reasons instead of to torture people. Frankly I think her character quite resembles young teens. But there are some good lessons she learns and that is what makes the book even better. A rather good read!

Review for A New Perspective (Second Chance Series) by Christina Escue

Blurb:
WARNING: Mild language and mild sexual content.. 15+

After a few weeks away, Karla returned home to discover that things weren’t quite the way she thought they were. Upon reading Diane’s letters, Karla has to come to terms with a side of her mother she’d never seen, a side she never thought existed.

A turn of events at school leads Karla and her friends down a path that can open doorways they never knew were there.

As Karla embraces this new perspective on what she thought she knew, her daily life changes forever.

Will this change be for the good or will it lead Karla down a path she can never turn back from?

Review:
A New Perspective is a fitting ending to this series. You get your HEA and Karla decides she will no longer be a victim. And...she decides to live her life and not just have it revolve around a boy. Love is a very powerful thing and few people find it at such a young age these days, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your dreams.

4 out of 5 stars!

Review for Ascenders: High School for the Recently Deceased (Ascenders Saga) (Volume 1) by C.L. Gaber

Synopsis:

Walker Callaghan doesn't know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago...and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences. Walker Callaghan, 17, is dead. She doesn't go to heaven or hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were the morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.

These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much. In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. "There are even cheerleaders in death," Walker observes. It's not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who "used to have this band." The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie.
Principal King explains the rules -- there are none. Why? You can't die twice.
There is no homework. No tests. No SATS. You're just there to learn because the human brain isn't fully formed until you're 24.

By the way, you can't get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do ...because no one knows how long you'll stay in this realm or what's next.
"Losing someone you love would be like dying twice," Walker says.

* * * * * *
Walker Callaghan has just arrived at the Academy after a tragic car accident. “Is this heaven or is this high school?” she asks.
She finds out her new life is a bit of both as she falls in love with tat-covered, bad boy Daniel Reid who is about to break the only sacred rule of this place. He's looking for a portal to return back to the living realm.
He needs just one hour to retrieve his younger brother who strangely never arrived at The Academy. Bobby is an Earth Bound Spirit, stuck at a plane crash site that took both of their lives as their rich father piloted his private jet nose-first into a cornfield on Christmas Eve.
Walker loves Daniel and risks it all to go with him.
Have they learned enough to outsmart dangerous forces while transporting a young child with them? Can their love survive the fragmented evil parts of themselves that are now hunting them down as they try to find a way back to the middle?
At the Academy, you learn the lessons of an after-lifetime.

Review:
(Because there is some language in this book, I would not recommend to readers under age 16.)  I just finished up reading this very interesting tale by C.L. Gaber about a girl who dies in a tragic accident and ends up going to high school in the after life.  The funny thing about it is that even after dying, high school is much the same in some ways for Walker.  There are the clicks of kids, classes, sports, and that one guy that everyone has a crush on but doesn't seem to pay attention to anyone until the new girl comes along.  The only differences are that Walker has much more freedom over her academics, there happens to be a scary rival school nearby that as student inmates, and the fact that you can pretty much do anything you want because you're not going to die again.    They call it the reset.  And Walker uses it a lot as she starts figuring out this new life she has, with her new friend Daniel.  Daniel lives next door with his brother and sisters, but no parents.  In fact, parents are almost non-existent because this place is mainly for those who have not completely formed, or are under the age of 24 when they died.  Daniel is doing his best to find a way back to get his little brother that became stuck on the earthly plane when they all died,  and yes, that family has one tragic story to tell about their lives and their deaths.  Now the little brother is stuck and Daniel is determined to save him, even though it could mean that he never comes back, or he gets sent to ITT as a student inmate for basically forever.  And in there, there is no reset button, but they can't die either.  So they feel all of the pain.  The closer Walker becomes to him, the more she is determined to figure out the dark, brooding guy who sits by her in class and she decides he needs some help.  Of course there are tons of complications and not to mention that if they even make it back, there will be things hunting them down.  Bad things.  So much risk keeps you on the edge of your seat while reading this one and it makes it hard to put the book down.  One more chapter turns into an all night reading binge.  I really found it interesting that there were clicks and mean girls, and the whole reset button for one school but not for the bad kids that died.  Overall an excellent read!
5 out of 5 stars!

Run (Caged Trilogy Book 1) by H.G. Lynch

Running through the woods one night, Tilly takes a nose dive and ends up in a werewolf camp.  She had been running for her life from the women who had adopted her when she was a young child.  They were witches and they were very cruel to her, making her raise demons and basically torturing her when she didn't do as told.  That had been her life for years until she escaped and then was rescued by Spencer, the black sheep of the werewolf camp.  He was the son of the alpha, but his mother had run off with him and when she died, Spencer was brought back to his father to live.  He had been a small child when he came back and his father didn't treat him as nicely as his half-brothers, taking out his years of anger and frustration of his son instead.  Tilly connects with Spencer like no one else in the camp, but insists that she doesn't care for him.  Spencer's half-brother, Dominic, has been getting very close to her and it makes Spencer jealous.  Realizing he has feelings for Tilly is a fight for him since she is always with Dominic.  To make matters worse, no one knows what Tilly is or what she's running from, but it could put them all in danger.

I love rooting for the under dog.  Those kind of books suck me in and I couldn't put this one down.  I read it in one day.  It was fascinating to watch the romance between Tilly and Spencer grow even though they keep trying to push the other away.  And things only get more complicated when the past comes out to play, but Spencer never abandons her.  He is always there for her.  It's sweet considering how distant he is to everyone else.  He's a very complicated character.  Tilly, however, is a rather naive girl since she was guarded and put under lock and key for years.  So having boys all over her like that is something new that she must sort out for herself.  Her feelings are confusing and I could see where they would be for someone who's never even had a boyfriend before.  This is a must read!!!

5 out of 5 stars!!!

Book Blurb:

Tilly is a witch...at least, she thinks she is. All she really knows is that she
has powers she shouldn't, and that the cruel women she escaped
from - who definitely are witches - will stop at nothing to make her their
prisoner again because of those powers.

But Tilly has fallen in with a strange group - a pack of werewolves. The pack
wants to protect her; none of them more so than Dominic, the alpha's
kind-hearted son. Tilly thinks she might be falling for him, but she can't help
being fascinated by his brooding, mysterious half-brother Spencer.

Caught between the two, Tilly isn't sure anymore what she's most scared of:
the witches hunting her down, or her own heart betraying her.
