Are you an Ash?
*Lack of appetite
Call the hotline if these symptoms come on suddenly!
Turns out Charlie Bennet was all of those things except the last. Don’t let the name fool you, Charlie was all woman and she wanted nothing to do with the ash … until the day she found out she was one.
It all started when infected bats bit a small group of humans and created what are now called vampires. Then, the male vampires knocked up some female humans and the result was a gorgeous race of all male ash. Superhuman freaks that had looks to kill.
Charlie is the first female ash, aka unicorn of the Hive – the gated compound in Portland that the humans have designated to isolate vampires and ash from society.
Problem? The Hive is full and only a select few will be allowed to live there. To live at all, really. If Charlie wants to earn the right to become a citizen of the Hive, she will have to survive the culling – a series of fights to the death. And guess what? Just because she’s a girl doesn’t mean she’ll get special treatment.
Good thing there’s Ryder, the mysterious lead ash enforcer, who seems to always have her back. But when secrets bubble to the surface, it will take more than one guy to save her.

Ash was a very entertaining read. Entertaining enough that I read it in one day. However, there were some plot points we see in so many books and to be honest I cringed a little when I realized they would be in this book. But I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't lose their entertainment value and become ho hum stuff like I expected. Charlie's name is a somewhat unique one since you don't see it too often in books. And it's a somewhat masculine form of her full name, which suits her. I also liked how she came into the hive with some misconceptions and ideas about those that lived there, but at the end she felt differently. Although I have to say after reading the ending one has to wonder how she became what she is in the first place. I'm kind of hoping her father pops back up at some point. He sounds very interesting. The fighting was rather like Hunger Games in ways and was just as bloody and disturbing too. It was almost like the Roman Colosseum, except the winners got a respectable place in the Hive and their society. I love the idea of the "sexy six"! This girl is college age in the book and you can tell. At the same time, I'm looking forward to the next one.
