Review for The Dragon Slayer by D.L. Colon

Blurb:
Glaycol Masters comes from a family of Hunters in the continent of Istagar.

Glaycol knows everything there is to know about every mystical creature and how to kill them, except for the Dragons. No one has been ever been able to kill them.
Glaycol still has to take his final test to become a Hunter worthy of bearing the name Masters, His weapon of preference; a great sword.
For his final test Bonca, Glaycol’s father, sent him to hunt the Chimera of the Valley of the Blood and bring each of their heads back. Glaycol has now killed the Chimera and is returning the Forest of Darkness, where he lives with his family on top of a mountain that oversees the city.
When he arrives his family is waiting for him, even his older brothers, who are also hunters, are there to celebrate the graduation of their brother. Once he presents the heads of the Chimera to his father, each of his family members gives him his gift. As they start they all give him a piece of armor until he has a full set of black armor. It is called, The Berserker.
Their celebration is cut short when the leader of the Dragons, Hyglarur, attacks them by surprise; killing everyone except for Glaycol. His new armor absorbed the fire, but he didn’t came out unscratched. He lost his right eye.
Glaycol, now driven by revenge and his family’s creed: Kill them all, has to find clues to where Hyglarur’s brother, Rotwar, is hiding. When he finds him Glaycol attacks, leaving him wounded and with a message for Hyglarur; Hyglarur, I am coming for you and your Dragon Empire. I now know that Dragons can be killed.
Glaycol Masters was once known as the Berserker, but a new name has been given to him. The continent will forever know him as The Dragon Slayer.
This is his Story.

Review:
Glaycol Masters is a man on a mission. He hates all dragons after his parents were killed in front of him by one, losing one eye and gaining permanent scars as well on that fated day. But there is more to meet the eye than just a man that his scars inside and out. He is strong enough to kill a dragon and goes on a journey to take down one particular dragon, the one that killed his family. Along the way he gains a few tentative friendships from those also wishing to depose the dragons who are now in control. Personally I would like to see more of these lesser characters. They seem very intriguing and all have different backgrounds. The end left me with some questions and a little sadness. However, the author has created these dragons in a way that it's as if I can hear their booming voices as I read. I am hoping for more of this story!
4 out of 5 stars!

Review:
It surprised me just how much I liked this book.  I am a fan of The Hobbit series but admittedly have never read the book and I haven't read The Lord of the Rings Trilogy either.  However, this book reminded me of the movies and it was quite an intriguing journey as this little group go off to fight a huge dragon.  There's already a dragon slayer in the midst, a cursed dark elf, an elf, a dwarf, a wizard,  and two dock workers.  They don't sound like much, but together they become quite the group and must endure a few trials and humiliations (mainly one character's humiliation) to even reach their destination.  There is little hope that they will make it out alive without some intervention and the female elf that joins them provides them with some help.  However, the dark elf stays cursed and one of the dock workers becomes quite enamored with the elf, who seems to also have some trouble tailing her as well.  She takes this worker under her wing to attempt to teach him some mental defense against magic and those that can bend other's minds to their will and to help him become a better swordsman.  After all she puts him through, it's amazing the man puts up with it.  But he does and is rewarded for it.  Quite a fascinating read!!

Twin Souls (Nevermore Book 1- A Vampire Hunter Novel) by K.A. Poe

Being abandoned by your dad was one thing, but when your mom walks out on you too, what do you do?  Alexis is going to be 18 soon and things in her life have suddenly gotten more complicated than she bargained for.  Feeling completely abandoned, she does her best to go on with her life while her dad left a long time ago and her mom just left to go live elsewhere with her boyfriend, Mark.  Her best friends, Karen and Jason, do their best to cheer her up, but should Alexis even care anymore?  Interestingly enough, she meets a mysterious new guy at school that is showing quite a bit of interest in Alex while her life is going down the drain.  She ends up going to his house and after midnight on her 18th birthday, he has to explain that she is from a line of vampire hunters and her mom and dad were not her real parents.  Her Uncle Paul is her real father and her real mother has been dead for a long time.  Paul hid Alex in order to protect her from the monsters he was hunting.  But the twist is that Salem, the new guy from school, is a vampire too.  He just doesn't drink human blood.  And he can conjure pretty much anything he wants to, food included.  The more that she gets to know Salem, the less she thinks he is a monster.  In fact, she really likes him and he cares for her very deeply.  But Paul is a hard case and feels like all vampires are monsters.  Then Alex sees her mother on t.v. after having been mauled by a bear.  She was in the hospital, but alive.  Alex has a bad feeling about what is going on, thinking that it was a vampire, like Mark.  Salem doesn't think it's him at first because he used to be like Salem.  But after a series of strange and short conversations with Alex's mom, Salem grows more suspicious of Mark being the perpetrator.  In a desperate move, Alex asks for she and Paul, along with her real aunt, to go see about her mom.  But she has no idea what she will find and how it will impact her life.

In a way you want to say poor Alex because of all of the hardships she had to endure.  However, she is one tough girl and does her absolute best to deal with things as they come.  It is a lot to take in being abandoned by two parents only to find out neither are your real parents and your real dad wants a relationship with you.  He wants to be dad while Alex is not ready to accept that just yet.  It is a tenuous situation and things get more and more strained with the situation with Alex's mom and then finding out that Alex has an exceptionally rare gift.  Then there is Salem, who Paul has tried to kill a few times and almost succeeded at one point.  Will Paul be able to accept their growing relationship?  And more importantly, will Alex be able to accept who she really is?
