From an early age, Brett Armstrong had a love for literature and history. At age nine, he combined the two for his first time in a short story set in the last days of the Aztec Empire. After that, writing’s role in his life waxed and waned periodically, always a dream on the horizon, till he reached college. At West Virginia University, he entered the Computer Engineering program and spent two years pursuing that degree before an opportunity to take a creative writing class, for fun, came along. Editing

“No noticeable typos or weird grammar errors, I'm usually knocked out of the story by those so this was nice.” – from a review of Chameleon Assassin.

I always read the 1- and 2-star reviews before I buy a book. That’s where reviewers who are bothered by poor writing and editing voice their displeasure. I’ve taught writing at a major U.S. university and written and edited in the business world most of my working life. Like the reviewer quoted above, typos, grammatical errors, and incorrect word choices will pull me out of a story. If it happens too often, it can destroy my reading enjoyment.

The English language is complex and difficult. I find errors everywhere I read. Newspapers and the internet are especially bad, but I’ve found errors in traditionally published novels, including a Pulitzer Prize winner. Almost all book blogs and other review sites have a “Review Policy” page. Almost all of them require that books submitted to them be “professionally edited.”

Amazon, Kobo, iBooks, Barnes and Noble, and all the other outlets that carry author-published books do not provide editing services, nor do they check the books they sell for quality of writing or formatting. As a result, many readers have become wary of self-published books.

Before I come across as overly smug, let me say that I would be embarrassed to present my writing without multiple editing passes. The difference between my first drafts and the final product is significant. I’m also a believer that no one is qualified to edit their own work. I do clean it up as much as I can before I send it to my editor, but I’m always shocked at how much she corrects. I’m also always pleased at how much better the books read after suffering from her attention.

Self-published books fit into three tiers. Books in the top tier are indistinguishable from books from the traditional publishing houses. They have attractive covers, good writing, are cleanly edited and properly formatted.

The second tier books are distinguished by a lack of editing. Many have interesting, compelling stories, but they have typos, word choice and grammatical errors, passive constructions, and other issues that a good editor would have caught and corrected.

Some of these authors enjoy considerable success. As one told me recently, “I really don't think that a few typos/mistakes spread around make much of a difference considering that, again, I'm reading a book now and there are typos and even a few plot holes in the story which I am enjoying anyway (she's a super best selling author!).”

The problem wasn’t typos, it was wrong word choices and poor grammar. She had paid an editor, and maintained that she couldn’t afford another one because of the money she spent on a cover and formatting. Unfortunately, her editor wasn’t very good.

The third tier books are so poorly written that they sink into oblivion fairly quickly. The chances a reader will even find them on Amazon or B&N are slim. Amazon has six million books in their store, and those with sales ranks below a million don’t show up in general searches.

The good news is that more and more self-published authors are embracing professionalism and producing a quality product. Many readers are unaware that the authors they enjoy are self-published. I’m currently reading a book by a best-selling traditionally-published author, but the book I’m reading was self-published.

A pause, then the electronic voice said, "Just those on this side of the inner ring of this level. No other apartments had sub-zero temperatures for an extended period." The woman sighed, her shoulders relaxing along with her voice. "Good. I want temperatures matched to those in 407 until the ice has melted in all affected apartments, and I want floor cleaning robots activated in all of them. Get me every Maintenance worker we have in the Complex, and a load of replacement pipes. This is urgent." "Implementing orders now," the voice said. As if on command, Galen's communications device sounded an alert. The woman whirled around, so her surprised eyes met his. She wasn't more than a girl, really, despite her authoritative orders to the building management AI. Yet her dark eyes seemed to x-ray his soul, if he believed in such a thing. "Aren't we supposed to be trying to get along?" Galen said. "You know, us and the Metas, now the war's over?" The girl snorted. "Oh, sure. The war's over and we live under a peace treaty, so we're not supposed to kill each other, but there was nothing in the treaty about banning stupidity. So I guess we'll just have to live with that." Galen laughed. She wasn't stupid, that was for sure. "I'm Galen," he said, extending a hand in greeting. "I'm supposed to be the environmental engineer responsible for the Complex, and while I don't think I've officially started work yet, I think your AI just conscripted me." He pointed at his right hand, which hid the chip implant that held his communication device. "I've changed a few pipes in my time. I did my apprenticeship on shipboard environmental systems. Nothing as state of the art as this place. Our ship was falling apart, cobbled together from spare parts and scrap metal in the first place. You'd replace one thing, only to find something else had fallen off while you were working. I can handle pipe replacements." Her cool fingers meshed with his as she shook his hand. Her eyes lit up. "So you're the genius engineer Lennox told me about. I thought you'd be older." Her mischievous grin did things to Galen's insides. Book Two of The Extraction Files

Review:

WARNING: SOME SPOILERS.

I'll be honest, I had mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I love the idea of bugs burrowing into people and controlling their actions and on occasion their thoughts. It's totally gross and nasty but cool and makes for a great science fiction read. And this book was quite fascinating in that degree. However, the relationships between some of the characters were a bit confusing at times. And I kind of felt like the whole reason behind the bugs would be a little more complicated than it was. Now, if you don't particularly like spoilers, you might not want to read further just for good measure. The one thing that hit me hardest was Abraham's(Alex) story. After following him for two books, I did not particularly like how things ended on that end. He and Mable's son felt like unfinished business even after what happened to them. Perhaps it was because the colony they were on was so isolated and I didn't understand the need for their long tracking story once I knew how it ended. That being said, I enjoyed reading The Lethal Agent and especially liked how much of a family atmosphere the group had at the end.

Review:

The second book in this series is even better than the first! More adventure, a little hint at some romance, and more surprises around every corner! Liora continues to amaze me with her awesome abilities, but I also feel sorry for her in a way because of how everyone views her. She is dangerous and a weapon, and most of the people in these books have a hard time seeing past that exterior to the part of her that has retained her humanity. So unlike full blood Damaclans, she has empathy and anger and she displays it when someone she cares about is threatened or hurt. I am totally rooting for her and Tariq. Who couldn't when he is as much of a tortured soul as she is in ways? They both need some healing and are good for each other. As for the ending, I totally did not see that coming! Just...wow!

Review:

I have found that I like to dabble in science fiction books on occasion and I enjoyed reading this one.  As much as I loved science as a child, I have always been more of an Earth Science type of girl, and not as much about physics and what not.  It was pretty easy for me to keep up with this book and I loved Liora.  She's a great character!  Her past was so hard that it made me cringe several times as the book went through some of her background.  There is not just one bad guy in this book.  It seems like there are two main ones with several smaller ones in the form of Revolutionaries that keep attacking Liora and her new friends.  After having suffered an awful childhood because she was an unwanted half-blood by most everyone except her mother, everyone in her clan is killed by something I still don't quite understand but can only guess that it's another strange creature that's something like a demon where she lived.  Or perhaps they traveled there since it seems that all sorts of people and creatures travel through space to different planets and asteroids in this book.  Whether it's probable or not is irrelevant to me in this type of book though.  It's science fiction, where the improbable becomes certainty.  And that is one of the reasons I like to read this genre sometimes.  As for Liora, she goes from one suffering situation to another.  One can't help but want to feel sorry for her, but this chick doesn't want pity.  She wants to kick butt and just be free.  A very nice read!

A slight sound caught Aleric’s ear. He hesitated near a room on the left. The door was shut. He reached for the doorknob and turned it slowly. The door swung inward with a slight creak.

“Come out, come out,” Aleric said. His heart thundered in his chest. He took a step inside the dark room, then another. There were no windows or emergency lighting; only the rectangle of dim light from the doorway spilled inside to illuminate the shadows along the wall.

It appeared to be an equipment room of some sort. Stacks of chairs, a few tables, and short, moveable walls had been placed randomly inside. Aleric squinted, wishing he was in wolf form so he could see better. If he phased, the Dark fae beast would be far stronger than him and he wouldn’t have the ability to use the cord or anything else against it. He might be faster, but given the creature’s reaction to him earlier, he wasn’t sure if he could get the gargoyle to chase him.

Aleric was nearly to the back wall when his eyes made out the form hunched in the far corner. It had curved edges where everything else in the storage room was straight and severe. His ears picked up the faintest breath shuddering from huge lungs. The deep bellows sound of the gargoyle’s heart caught Aleric’s ears. He pretended not to notice it, turning just enough so that his course led him past the creature instead of straight to it.

Feigning nonchalance, Aleric stooped and picked up a thick book. He flipped it open as he walked past the creature.

“Interesting. Mmmhmmm. Very interesting.” He flipped through the pages. He was nearly past the gargoyle when he slammed the book shut and threw it at the creature’s face. The book hit it right on the snout. The gargoyle reared back in surprise.

“Gotcha,” Aleric told the huge creature.

My Review:
The Killing Jar follows the story of several different people. Some live on Earth and some don't. The Earth is dying at a rapid pace and its ability to sustain life is growing smaller each day that goes by. Within a century this ability will be completely gone. There are researchers that are trying to find somewhere to live while there are those on Earth just trying to survive. Several of the people end up messing up and being put in a special facility where they are trained to go on top secret, dangerous missions. It's either that or be sent somewhere awful to die a slow death from the haze that now covers Earth. Some stories I found a little more confusing than others, but with this being the first in a series, I hope to see more in the next book. I did have lots of questions about the book and besides so many story lines, my only other complaint really is that just about the time things start coming together as pieces of a puzzle do, the book ends...Otherwise, this is a pretty cool and interesting science fiction read.
