Excerpt

“Can we talk?” Penny tilted her head toward the back. “Privately.” Was it her imagination, or did Caleb’s eyes widen momentarily in fear?

He wiped his hands on a dishtowel and nodded. “Sure.”

She trailed after him down the back hallway, past the restrooms. He halted in front of the office door and turned around to face her. It was quieter back here. The voices of the businessmen had faded to a dull murmur, blending with the white noise hum of the refrigerator case at the end of the hall.

Neither of them spoke. They were standing close enough that she could see the gold in his eyes. As they stared at one another, the memory of the kiss floated in the air between them. Their fevered breaths. The way he’d moaned into her mouth. Penny licked her lips.

“I owe you an apology,” Caleb said.

The words punctured her thin bubble of hope. “I see.”

“I shouldn’t have kissed you like that.”

“Why not?” she heard herself say a little too loudly.

He flinched at the challenge in her tone. “What?”

“Why shouldn’t you have kissed me?”

The bell on the front door jangled, and there was a murmur of voices as more customers came in. Malik was out front. He could handle them.

Caleb shuffled his feet like he was itching to escape. “Um…”

“Do you have a girlfriend?” Penny asked.

He shook his head at the floor. “No, nothing like that.”

She rested her hands on her hips. “Did you not mean to do it? Am I supposed to believe it was some sort of accident? That you tripped and fell onto my face?”

“No, of course not, I—”

“Because I’m trying to understand why you’d do something like that and then run off and leave me standing there. And why you’re apologizing now for kissing me instead of for running off.”

“I’m sorry for that part too,” he said quietly.

“It wasn’t very nice.”

“You’re right, it wasn’t. I’m sorry.” God, he was beautiful when he was being contrite. It made it impossible to think straight.

Penny stared at his collarbone, which was also stupidly attractive, but not quite as distracting as his face. “So why did you do it?”

“Run off? Or kiss you?”

“Both. Either. Why are you being so weird about all of it?”

“Um.” He shifted his weight, lowering his eyes to the floor. If she hadn’t been standing between him and escape, he might have actually bolted like a horse.

She crossed her arms. “Did you not want to kiss me?”

“No, I…” He trailed off, rubbing his palms on his thighs.

Penny waited. She was prepared to wait all day if that was what it took.

He looked up. “I’ve wanted to kiss you for a long time.”

That stopped her in her tracks. “W—what?”

His eyes looked into hers. “You heard me.”

Something burned in her chest, constricting her voice to a whisper. “But you don’t even like me.”

“That’s not true.” He looked pained.

How long was a long time? Since last summer when he’d started working here? Did that mean—could she have been dating Caleb instead of Kenneth? She tried to picture it. Caleb asking her on a date, taking her out to dinner. Smiling across the table as he tried to charm her, hoping for a goodnight kiss at the end of the evening. She couldn’t even picture the smiling part, much less the rest of it.

She tried to clear her throat and made a choking sound instead. “You acted like you didn’t like me.”

“I was trying to keep my distance.” His expression turned reproachful. “You had a boyfriend.”

“Who was a cheating jerk. Which you could have told me at any time.” If Caleb had ever given her even the slightest hint he was actually interested in her, she would have dropped Kenneth like the flaming bag of dog poop he’d turned out to be.

“I was afraid you’d hate me if I was the one to tell you.”

Unbelievable. Literally, it was impossible to believe this man who’d barely acknowledged her existence had actually been attracted to her all this time. It was inconceivable, and not in the Princess Bride sense of the word.

And yet…he had kissed her. It hadn’t been a half-hearted kiss either. That was a serious kiss he’d given her. Deadly serious.

Penny swallowed. “I don’t have a boyfriend anymore.”

Release Blitz and Review for Clam Jam by RC Boldt

Title: Clam Jam
Author: RC Boldt
Genre: Romantic Comedy/New Adult Romance
Release Date: January 10, 2017

Blurb

“Clam Jam”
Definition: the female equivalent of a cock block.
Example: You’re chatting with a guy you’re interested in and your friend comes along and lays claim to him.

Maggie
That’s my life—except it’s worse. My friend who keeps “jamming” me is my gay roommate and if that isn’t a W.T.F. moment, I’m not sure what is.

Fact: He went home with three—yes, three—of the guys I had been so sure were into me.

Fact: He’s really pissing me off. I mean, hello? I’m trying to get back in the saddle, but I’ll never manage to get a boyfriend before the age of fifty if he keeps this up.

Fact: Secretly, I wonder what it would be like if he weren’t gay. Why do all the hot, sweet, tender-hearted guys have to be gay?

Fact: My gay-dar needs a serious tune-up.

Ry
The day I interviewed for the room to rent, everything changed. I knew I had met “the girl”, except there was one small problem: she didn’t want anything to do with men. I recognized a top-notch force field when I saw one. She’d been burned badly and didn’t want to deal with a heterosexual guy as a roommate. I could’ve turned around and found another place to live, but I wanted to live there—with her.

So I had to go “undercover”.

Fact: I’m in love with my roommate.

Fact: I’m a likely candidate for carpal tunnel surgery since all the action I’ve had for the past year has been my hand.

Fact: She’s going to hate me if I come clean now.

Fact: I’m not giving up. Which means, I’ll just have to continue to run defense until I figure out a way to get Maggie to see the “real” me.

The me that loves her.

The me that would never do her wrong.

Until then, I’ll keep running off every guy who shows any interest.

Until then, I’ll continue to Clam Jam.

Review

Seriously, this book not only made me laugh but it made me cry once or twice. The whole idea behind the book was the reason I decided to hit that review option when I received the info on it. And it really didn't disappoint. Which is good because when a book sounds that good, you have to stop and wonder whether it will let you down or be even better than your expectations. There is hardly middle ground for anything else. But I fell in love with the characters. Ryland might be the most romantic guy ever. The napkin writing stuff is so sweet. Now, his game plan had me laughing at times! Maggie is a genuinely nice and caring person. So much so that she just either can't see the obvious or is turning a blind eye to it all. Sarah is one smart chick and as one of the supporting characters, I found her protective of Maggie, and quick. Jack? I love Jack. You have to be some kind of friend to go along with such a scheme. He's a fun character I wouldn't mind seeing more of. Overall, it's a book I would read over and over again.
5 out of 5 stars!!

Excerpt

“Ryland James!” I bang on his bathroom door, hollering loudly. “Did you eat the last—”

The door swings open, drawing my speech to a sudden halt because … ooooh, sweet, dripping wet abs.

My eyes are riveted.

He’s got a towel wrapped around his waist, and I don’t even realize I’m moving until Ry releases a sharp hiss at my touch. Because my finger is tracing over the slight indentations in his abdominal muscles.

“Um …” He clears his throat, his voice husky and deep. “Mags?”

“Uh-huh,” I murmur absently, my fingertip stopping one of the trickling droplets of water on his skin, tracing it down over his belly button, and—

His fingers grasp my wrist, drawing my hand to a halt, and my eyes dart up to his in alarm because crap. That was like an out-of-body experience.

“Oh, crap. I’m sorry. I just really, um … crap.” That’s all I can utter. Nonsense. No one would believe I have my graduate degree if they heard me right now.

If my tongue had a voice of its own, it would probably say something like, “Just the tip. That’s all I want.” The tip of my tongue tracing over Ry’s abs, that is. You know, just to prove someone Photoshopped him. Or not.

Because I’ll take one for the team. I’m a giver like that. People might even think of canonizing me as a saint after all this. Really.

Oh, and then … Abracadabra! Poof! He’d no longer be gay, profess his undying love for me, and wouldn’t ever leave me for another guy.

Or woman.

Wow. That scenario even sounds crazy in my head.

Shaking off my thoughts, I take one more glance down at his abs—just one more glance—and that’s when I see it.

“Oh, boy,” I breathe out. Ry is hard, tenting the towel, and I really want it to drop. Accidentally, of course. Like an “oops” moment. Totally harmless and innocent.

Oh. My. God. I’m a horrible person. I’m thinking of my roommate’s penis! My roommate who has quickly become one of my best friends.

Oh, the shame!

Where did this inner slut come from? It’s like she’s been lying in wait—for him, apparently.

But, really. I can take a little peek, right?

99 cent sale for Tales of a Mommy's Sippy-CUp by Mary E Haddock

For one week only, get Tales of a Mommy’s Sippy-Cup for only 0.99.
This refreshingly, fun book lets you into the mind of a mom and wife who just rather keep it real!

Synopsis:
Have you ever wondered what’s in a mommy’s sippy cup? Maybe a refreshing jug of water infused with lemon, a protein shake packed with extra kale, or, just maybe, it’s the unassuming adult cocktail. Let’s face it, being a mom and wife isn’t always the fairytale we think its cracked up to be; instead of princess dresses and a waiting knight in shining armor, most mothers are judged as if its still 1950’s suburbia.

Being a woman is challenging, and women have not only become afraid to be honest with others, but with themselves.

Tales of a Mommy’s Sippy-Cup started as a blog that impressively offended residents of the author’s small town. The controversy wrapped snug around the honest matter-of-fact tenacity facing the functions of motherhood often ignored. Mary Haddock not only embraces the actuality of her motherly role, but the social pariah she had become amongst the superficial parents in her community. She went against the grain and wrote down her personal narrative for all to enjoy.

Equipped with a sippy-cup tip at the end of each tale, Haddock makes clear that fellow mama warriors are not alone in this insane universe called motherhood.

So grab your special sippy-cup with your choice of adult beverage, and let’s sit back and laugh at how moms try to keep it real. Cheers!
