Review for Born to Blood (Almost Human The Second Trilogy Book 1) by Melanie Nowak

Review:

Born to Blood is the first book in the second Almost Human trilogy by Melanie Nowak.  If you have not ever heard of the series before and are just now checking it out, there are other posts on my page with reviews, blurbs, and links to them on Amazon.  I am very invested in this series after reading this book and can't wait to see what is in store for everyone in the series!  Even though this book is mostly about Mattie and Alyson, we do see some glimpses of Felicity and Ben and of course we see quite a bit of Cain again as well.  Who I didn't expect to see that came as a great surprise?  Cain's sire!!  That was a totally unexpected blow!!  That woman is kind of nuts too.  And she brings company that we don't see much about, but I am betting he turns back up later in the series.  I just wish I knew who this guy was.  As for Ben, we see a new side of him as well.  Gone is the angry, jealous guy who is upset that the girl he likes is dating a vamp.  Cain is gone now and Felicity and Ben have capitalized on the feelings that were there before Cain abruptly showed up in Felicity's life.  Ben is now a caring and tender guy who, although makes some dumb mistakes, does more than enough to mend them.  As for Felicity, I still have to wonder just how deeply her feelings for Cain still run since he is still so present in her thoughts.  The story between Mattie and Alyson is a very intriguing one since Mattie is now Alyson's sire and she has turned up with some unusual talents that make Mattie and even Cain nervous enough to seek out Arif again.  I couldn't agree more that the guy was creepy enough in the first series.  Now, the creep factor sky rockets.  And I have to say that the experiments done by Alyson with her blood are pretty freaky.  All I can say is that you would have to read it to understand and it is nothing I have ever read about in a vampire book before.  Great read!

5 out of 5 stars!!

Synopsis:

ALMOST HUMAN ~ The Second Trilogy Volume 1: Born to Blood

Alyson used to think that vampires were almost human; that is, until she became one. Finally consenting to be lovingly turned by her boyfriend Mattie, Allie has come to possess traits and powers previously unknown among vampire kind. Now Allie seeks the help of the elder vampire Cain, to discover not only what she is capable of, but why.

Still healing from heartbreak over Cain, Felicity looked forward to a nice, human relationship, but dating the son of a vampire hunter, and having a psychic bond with one of his prey makes life far from normal. How can Ben and Felicity discover the truths of love when they are forced to live with so many secrets?

Someone has contrived a diabolical plan to control destiny, and blood may not only be the catalyst for change, but also the master of manipulation behind it. Is rebirth as a vampire always at the discretion of an undead sire, or sometimes is one simply born to blood

*Haven't read the other books of the series? You can still read this book - it's the first of a trilogy!

*ALMOST HUMAN is a series of successive trilogies, not stand-alone books. Each trilogy is self-contained enough to be read alone as a 3 book set, but the story unfolds chronologically, and the characters do continue from one trilogy to the next. Main storyline closure is in each 3rd book, but there are also story-ties leading from one trilogy to the next in the series.

Beautiful Monster by Bella Forrest

Amy is a senior in high school who is HIV positive.  She lives her life day in and day out knowing that eventually it will turn into AIDS and she will die from it.  While there is no cure for AIDS, there is medicine to help her condition.  Amy is home schooled, doing most of her work online.  She is an excellent student.  But Amy also gets tired of staying home and away from everyone all of the time.  It is for her own good, but she longs to do more with her life.  Her dad works at a school nearby that is very prestigious and regularly turns out students who go on to be famous in movies, ads, ballet, and more.  The headmaster there is now a 23-year-old retired movie star named Liam.  When Amy sneaks out of the house to go to the school one day, they are holding auditions for the next scholarship winner to the school.  Liam is presiding over it.  Amy ends up auditioning and winning.  She moves in to a room there and starts taking classes.  It doesn't take long for her to be labeled the teacher's pet.  It's obvious how Liam favors her.  But it soon turns into more than that and the two find themselves in a secret romance.  That is until one night when Amy finds out that he's a vampire.  She doesn't think she can handle anymore going on in her life so they stop seeing each other.  While all of this is going on, Amy has befriended Liam's good friend and shield, Porshe.  Porshe is HIV positive too, but much sicker than anyone realizes.  The sicker a shield is, the more powerful they are.  They can get to the point where vampires near them can no longer change at night.  But this is when they are on death's doorstep pretty much.  Liam has promised her immortality for helping shield him from other vampires, especially his sire, Selene.  She seems to pop up at the most inopportune times to check in on Liam and make sure he is doing what he's supposed to.  Right before their big production of Beauty and the Beast, Selene turns up again, watching and waiting.

I don't know about how everyone else felt, but, while this was a decent read and all, it had some places where you were just sitting there saying "no way".  My main point?  The 18-year-old senior is dating the headmaster.  Where I live, that would be more than just frowned upon.  It doesn't matter that they are both consenting adults.  She is a senior and he is the headmaster of the entire school.  Period.  This hot-for-teacher stuff is not my cup of tea.  I realize at some point a lot of kids and teens have a crush on one of their teachers.  That doesn't mean you act on it.  It makes Liam look even more like the beast that he is.  Not to mention it bothers Amy so much that it looks like everything is being handed to her on a silver platter because of Liam.  Well, maybe she shouldn't have gotten involved with him to begin with.  Instead of squelching rumors, they give everyone something to talk about, especially when he is sneaking in and out of her room.
Another thing was how in the world has Amy been sneaking into this school for so long and never gotten caught?  She's been sitting in on class and theater and getting the free education without the connections.  Yes her dad works there, but he has never come home early or sick to find that she wasn't there?  I am pretty sure she would have been barred inside her house if he had.  He seems very overprotective, but for good reason.
On the other hand, the book did have some good qualities to it.  It was a very different kind of vampire novel with Liam only turning into a vamp after sunset.  Then he gets all blood-thirsty.  Also, alcohol seems to help dull the need for blood for him.  Then there is the whole shield thing that you will understand more of as you read the book.
Porshe was an amazing character throughout the book.  She was kind and thoughtful, always taking care of others before herself, even though she was deathly ill.  I liked her much better as a heroine of this story than Amy.  Amy wasn't bad, but Porsche was the hidden heroine of the story.  Without her, Liam and Amy would not have been where they were.
I'm saying 3 out of 5 stars for this one, because there was some creativity in it.

Blood and Bone by Tara Brown

This book was a real mind bender.  You have to read it all of the way through to even begin to make sense of it and honestly if you could read it all the way through at one time it would be even better.  Picking up on small details within the book are worth remembering as well.  What I mean by that are things like these weird trigger words that Jane seems to have.  It makes certain memories come to her to help reveal certain aspects of the story later on.  I got about 2/3 the way through this one and decided I was good and confused.  I almost quit reading it, but am glad I didn't because much was revealed in the last 5% of the book.
This novel is about a woman named Jane who seems completely normal until two different people call her Samantha Barnes on the same day.  It weirds her out and she starts looking online for answers to who this girl is.  Apparently she looks just like her, down to the scar on her chin.  This scares her even more and her boyfriend, Derek, who is a doctor, tries to calm her down.  Eventually he tells her she was Samantha until he made them disappear.  It appears that Jane has some unsavory little practices that she does while sleepwalking on occasion.  She feels like a monster once he tells her all of this.  But then a guy named Rory shows up and tells her how Derek is lying and has manipulated her so much.  He tells her that the doctor she has been with for so long is a killer.  He kills people and is dang good at it.  While she goes through all this she is also dealing with her childhood memories of her father, things she would as soon forget.  But nothing is as it seems in this game of "to catch a killer".  Beware!  This book will give you whiplash from this chick going back and forth on how evil she thinks her boyfriend might be!  And there are adult situations so it's not for children!  Happy reading!  And good luck through the labyrinth of this girl's sick and twisted mind...

Reign of Blood (Book 1) by Alexia Purdy

April should be trying to finish high school.  Instead, she's killing vampires and raiding abandoned stores for food and supplies that she, her mother, and brother need to survive.  A year ago a virus overtook the world and now nothing is how it was.  Almost everyone died and those that didn't, turned into these zombie-like vampires with fangs and a taste for blood.  This is the world she now lives in.  April and her family live in this underground bunker that has solar powered energy and even showers.  Everything gets recycled and there is a lot of non-perishable food there.  But her mom doesn't want them using it unless they absolutely have to.  So they raid the empty stores in Las Vegas.  Then one of the worst things that can happen does; her family is taken.  She has no idea who has them or even where they could be.  So she starts searching for them in the numerous casinos.  Her new-found rage for the loss of her family causes April to get reckless and vengeful, burning some of the casinos and the vampires within them.  Then things change a lot.  Apparently there is more than one type of vampire out there.  There are ones out there that are so very similar to humans it is hard to see the difference except for their glowing, strange eyes, fangs, and incredible speed.  As much as she dislikes these creatures, they are the only way she will find her family.  So for now she must rely on what had been her enemy to find them.  Once April enters their hive though, she hopes she doesn't get murdered by the others before she can get the help she needs.

I liked reading this book.  It was a different look at post-apocalyptic Vegas and what it would be like with vampires roaming the place.  The best part?  The diversity of the vampires.  It brings a whole new spin to the story.  There is so much that changed when the virus hit and you don't even find out the full extent of it until near the end of the book.  Even April has a few surprises about herself!  However, there were some slow spots in the book that bring down its rating for me personally.  Otherwise, this is a pretty fascinating read!
